We have been notified that there has been an increased volume of fraudsters spoofing (disguising a communication from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source) Texas credit union phone numbers, including EECU’s local phone number, (817) 882-0800. The fraudsters are impersonating EECU employees from the “Fraud Department” and their intent is to obtain confidential information.

In particular, the fraudsters are telling debit cardholders that EECU detected a fraudulent charge out-of-state (e.g., Florida) and that the card will be shut down for their protection. Next, they ask the cardholder for an authentication code which has been sent to the cardholder by text message in order to confirm the shut-down. (See examples.) Do not give them the code. The authentication code will allow the fraudsters to activate the mobile wallet associated with the cardholder’s cellphone.

If you receive a call or text from (817) 882-0800 claiming to be EECU’s “Fraud Department,” do not respond to it. Instead please immediately notify EECU directly at our 24-hour debit card hotline at (800) 333-9934.

We are committed to protecting your banking and personal information. If you have any questions about this fraud alert, please call us at (800) 333-9934.
